whole nother issue! maby that's why you had the battery out in the first place, drained from lights on! check the brake peddle for full return or brake switch at peddle lever under dash

you did not change out the battery....tsk tsk, they go bad after five years (new tin/antimony alloy) subsequent damage to the alternator and hopefully the ECU will have been spared with a fuse or two~

The lights were not on before the battery was changed. when the battery was hooked up in reverse could it have damaged the brake pedal switch causing it to be on always?

anything can happen when the ground is reversed...now you must check the switch to see if the contacts have been "welded" and put a new one in there, or try to adjust it...have someone stand behind the car to let you know when the lights have gone off...grobble down and adjust the barrel adjustment for the switch~

Your first battery went dead because you brake lights were on. On my 95 a plastic piece on the switch wore out and brake lights stayed on.
