You can start by going to Auto Zone they can give you a generic diagnosis of what the possible problem could be then you can start calling around to mechanic to see what it would cost. Also check out cars.com they have a repair estimator to give you an idea of what certain repairs will cost.

Sounds like a weak fuel pump or the in tank filter is clogged. What country are you in? It would be helpful to know what the engine code is for the check engine light.
