i drive a mitsubishi mirage 1997 saloon car. my problem is that when the engine gets hot, it begins to backfire with a "poo-poo" sound after which the engine slows down to a stop.

You may have a bad Crank Position Sensor. Is your check engine light on? If so, you should get the codes read. That will narrow it down to the exact issue...........

Bring it to a shop and have them read your error codes. That is why the check engine light is on. They will be able to diagnose the exact issue.
