Blue smoke. Engine missing often. 4x4 light is on
but not engaged.

Oil leaking into the combustion cycle, burning with gasoline and blowing out the exhaust. Leak could be valve guides, or if it's a lot, could be bad piston rings, blown head gasket, or worse. This is what's causing the misfiring. By now, you've probably destroyed the catalytic converter. Power loss is probably what's preventing the 4x4 from engaging.
