2000 mercury cougar try to start get
clicking sound get a jump start for a
minute then backfire and cuts off

A rapid clicking sound is a low voltage problem, get battery and charging system tested, this sounds like the charging system is not operating and your running the vehicle directly off the battery and it may not be in the best condition.
