2004 Mercury sable fuel cap key

Asked by Mar 15, 2019 at 06:08 PM about the 2004 Mercury Sable

Question type: General

Are all of these fuel caps keyed alike? I recently
bought this car and went to get gas today only to
discover it requires a key. The dealership said they
can't get a key, can I just buy another fuel cap and
use that key?

Why would you think that all the fuel caps would use the same key. It's a security issue. It's highly unethical for a dealer to sell you a car with a locking cap and not provide a key. If that's what happened, make then replace the cap. This would require a locksmith to get the current cap off.

I should clarify, I didn't buy from a dealership per se. I did buy from a person who sells a lot of cars and is registered as a dealership in my state because that's required by law. I've sent him a message asking about the key 4 hours ago and I haven't heard anything back. I called the local Mercury dealer to see if they can help, they cannot. They said the keys aren't available anymore. I did find online that there are fuel gas caps sold for my vehicle that are keyed alike, thus my question.
