When we shut the motor off you could hear the fan roar like a bad bearing, haven't had AC for a couple of years...so we replaced the fan assembly, hoses, new water pump & 190 thermostat....still overheat at high temps i.e. 90-95+ degrees outside, in traffic, once you get going the fan kicks on & the gauge fluctuates then comes back down...changed thermostat to a 180...still doing it....jacked car up, removed reservoir cap & let engine run thinking there was a air void....still smelling coolant, don't see any leaks. Put regular coolant in (green), but read somewhere I needed to use orange?? What's left?? Confused
Hi Patricia, have you checked the heater core yet? Start the car idle it until normal operating temperature is reached then check the 2 hoses going in to it. If one is significantly cooler than the other then its probably the heater core.
May also be the water pump. After the engine is cool start the engine, remove the radiator cap and look inside to make sure coolant is flowing. If its not then its probably the pump.
You have replaced most of the coolant system,if Katie,s advice as to the heater core being bad or plugged show,s to be ok you might want to check the fan clutch,if not tuning right will cause this issue from heating up.
Have the radiator removed and cleaned, just to be on the safe side.Throw in a new water pump while you're at it. New hoses too. I always suspect the radiator, when there are problems. the radiator shop will tell you if it was plugged. fan clutch OK?
