Could it be electrical or the alternator?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2005 Mercury Mariner was running fine. I turned
it off for five minutes to run into the house and
came back out to leave. When I tried to start the car
it started ticking loud inside the dash area. When I
turned the car off the radio came on, the blinkers
started blinking and the fans came on. The odd
thing is the keys weren’t even in the ignition. So
then I try to start it and all those things suddenly
turned off. I unplugged the battery in hopes it would
refresh the car so naturally everything shut down.
When I plug the battery back in the car starts
ticking and all lights flash. What can this be???
