2002 mazda tribute transmission no engaging?

I have a2002 mazda tribute and purchased it and
was told it has a bad transmission the guy bought
the car running parked it and when he went to
move it transmission would not engage into any
gears.i turn it on i rev up the rpms high. On drive
and it move i litle but dies not engage in gears
properlly anyone have this issue happen to the and
can help thanks?

Could be just a low fluid level. Let the Tribute warm up to operating temp, then with the engine running, pull the transmission dipstick, is the fluid between the cross hatches and nice and red? Probably black. So it's hard to say without tearing into it. Then your at a rebuild stage.
