Trunk won't close

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 96 Town car has some kind of
switch that automatically closes
the trunk tight. The switch seems
to have gone out because now the
trunk stays open that last inch or
2. Isn't there any way to close the
trunk manually, bypassing the
switch?

Your trunk lid has an automatic pull-down. You might have a defective switch and there are two. One stops full travel, the other stops draw-down travel. But as the gap is so small, it might be that the pull-down motor had been improperly manually set and the striker is set too high. To reset, unplug the power, then close the trunk manually. If this doesn't fix it, you'll have to replace the motor, the sensor, or the switch.
