A CVT uses a flexible chain and variable pitch pulleys instead of gears. In theory they are the next big thing in automotive technology. In practice they are not very reliable and are expensive to replace.
A car with a 6-8 speed automatic would be preferable over a CVT. So is a manual 5-6 speed.
