Electrical Fire

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 94 Ford Ranger with the 4 cylinder, 8 spark plug engine. I just
bought the truck not running. only info I really have on the truck is that one
day it died and wouldnt restart. they tried to dump the clutch and start it and
the wiring harness under the hood between the engine and firewall caught
fire. fire was minimal and damage is fixable with a new harness. my
question is what could have caused it to die like that then catch fire when
trying to start it by dumping the clutch?

The most feasible explanation is there was already a short in the harness to begin with and that is what killed the engine, and when the vehicle was forced to make electrical power by clutch starting and the engine spinning was all it took to set it on fire, as you stated it was a relatively easy fix so one can assume that there were no other sources of ignition present like oil or fuel.
