RE: Misfire Codes on 1998 Lexus es300

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So, what is a mechanical misfire caused by? A faulty engine, itself? I just had
my car diagnosed, because it started idling rough out of nowhere. First thing
the mechanic said was the check engine lights were turned off. That's why I
had no indication there was ever a problem. Secondly, the codes that it
pulled were Misfires in 1 and 4, and 6 others, as if all of the spark plugs were
bad. This would have indicated a more serious issue, such as an engine
issue. I bought new spark plugs. The old ones had to be removed. At that
point in time, I felt the mechanic should have checked the engine
compression, before putting the new spark plugs on. But, he did not. After
replacing spark plugs, there was still a rough idle. He said it could be an
ignition coil pack. They switched one out, checked all three, still rough idle. It
was only THEN he removed the front three new spark plugs to check the
engine compression and discovered there was absolutely no compression in
there. So, it appears the engine gave out. My question is--what code readout
would have pointed directly to a mechanical issue with the engine, as
opposed to the spark plugs or an ignition pack coil?
