Can you shift faster or more smoothly as an automatic transmission?

Question type: General

Modern automatic transmissions are so sophisticated today that less than 5
percent of new cars  sold in the USA have   manual-transmissions .  And,
unlike cars from 40 years ago,   a lot of these new automatics not only get
better mileage,   have fewer repairs and accelerate faster than the manual
transmissions.   Can you shift faster or more smoothly?

Not personally. The difference to me is either shift faster or more smoothly. Sure, I know how to speed-shift without even using the clutch... with practice. I destroyed a transmission in my GTO 'practicing' that. But smooth or quick.. one or the other. Nowadays I prefer the automatic. But no CVT. In Toyotas, the only CVT I have ever driven was very sluggish to get going. But at about 35mph It was a rocket (V6). Other CVT models idk

David, see this link below, it actually states as of 2013, only 3.9 percent of new cars sold in the USA are manual-transmission vehicles. http://www.edmunds.com/fuel-economy/five-myths- about-stick-shifts.html

I watch the races, usually at the same time I sit here at my desk and come here to this site. Depending on the track, like a good 2 or 2½ mile 'D' type with a mile of straightaway they approach 190 mph, they do not have radiator fans for obvious reasons... I was born and raised in Pomona CA and when I go 'home' I stay at the Fairplex Sheraton where the NHRA museum is and it is way cool. Matter of fact this is the museum. I took this with my phone from 5th floor

David, how does 0-60 in 7.4 seconds sound with the H6, my H4 is two seconds slower. I really don't race my car, but, these are statistics. As for the Subaru CVT transmission, it has gotten very good reviews. Here's a link to a website that reports 7.3 seconds for the 2015, pretty fast for a car as large as this. Back in the 60s, I thought that 0-60 in ten seconds was pretty fast. And, the size of engines have just gotten smaller with more technology, four valves per cylinder, etc. http://www.autoblog.com/2014/07/01/2015-subaru-outback-first- drive-review/

Mark this not a competition. I don't race either, but when I am on the open road and need some pep.. my lowly Corolla get's with it. 0-60 in 7flat. http://www.zeroto60times.com/vehicle-make/toyota-0-60-mph-times/

Indeed it does help 'shoes. I thought they didn't have a clutch but some exotic hybrid shiftable auto. Thanks.

Everywhere I looked was out-dated, saying they had to be carburetor and such. But at least this season they are FI

Hey guys, did you know that they banned CVT from Formula One racing. See this link http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2007/05/03/banned-continuously- variable-transmission-cvt/

David, my CVT transmission has enough pep for me, only notice a difference when I'm climbing hills with my trailer on really long grades. Still, it usually goes at least 55 or 60 everywhere and that's the speed limit pulling a trailer in California. I've got to be extra careful when towing as it changes the dynamics of the car with 1,000 pounds behind me and no trailer brakes. They electric brakes are only required when it's 1,500 pounds or more. Interesting, I originally thought it would be better to have electric brakes, but, the trailer manufacturer talked me out it. Said it would be too easy to have an accident if the electric brakes were to fail and lock up. Then, the car would be pulling an immobile object, For a car that seems so benign, the Outback wagon has an estimated top speed of 123 with the H4 and 138 with the H6. I would definitely never drive this fast, it would be a huge penalty and risk losing my license. Not happening!
