Transmission and/or torque converter issue. The pump shaft in the tranny tends to sound like a high-pitched whirring when they go. It might be the TC to shaft is stripped. Shaft can't turn consistently so there go your gears, until it catches. If the engine runs and revs like it should, take the car to a transmission shop for a diagnosis. Unfortunately to replace a TC they still have to drop the subframe and tranny, so most places will insist on either rebuilding the tranny as well or replacing it. In that case you're looking at about 14-1500, and that's on the cheap.

I have the same problem. My car would be a whining sound if I drive a steep uphill or drive straight longer than an hour. At first it was just a sound and then noticed that my RPMs would be shooting up but my speed wasn't going anywhere. I read that because nissans have CVT transmissions, there isn't enough time for the fluids to cool off after it passed through the transmission cooler. I read view few cases where people installed an additional transmission oil cooler to their car and it corrected the problem. I just installed one today but I have not tested it on an hour car ride just yet to let you know if it worked for me.

Your desperation sounds exactly like mine. It seems to only start after longer trips or on the highway. The high squealing noise but not super loud. The first time it lost power. Today it didn’t really lose power the same way but the speedometer literally dropped to 0 even thou I was still moving. Very strange, I’ve never seen a car do that. Then I stopped at the top of the incline and it started going fine with speedometer working again. What happened with yours? Mine is a 2008 Nissan Sentra. 2.0 liter.

The transmission is lonely and made by an Asian junk yard. Nissan hopes you have to buy a new CVT as they laugh all the way to the bank. Nissan also LIES when they tell you no other company can make CVT fluid that works like theirs. Nissan is really a Pissan after they get your money.

So getting the transmission oil changed doesn't help? Why didn't Nissan have a recall on the CVT transmission? I took my car back to the dealership twice and because they couldn't duplicate the noise, they re-coded the TCM and hoping if it makes that sound again (and it will because they didn't fix it) that a code will pop up to pinpoint the problem. The service manager admitted that the whining sound is probably coming from the transmission because she has a 2017 Nissan and it makes that noise at high speeds?
