Overheating 1995 Jeep Cherokee

I have a 95 Jeep cherokee.its overheating and I
was wanting to ask if the cooling fan may have
gone bad?  When I hooked up directly it worked,but
didn't when it started running hot? Please I'm not
sure what to try to do now.Thank you in advance.
