timming on my 96 grand cherokee lorado

replaced chain and gear and spacer but when I drop the distributer on one it wont run ,,only when I drop it closer to 5 will it run ,,,,???? have I got it off a tooth maybe on the chain or what I'm sure I got it on top dead center on cylinder 1 ..this don't make sense

If the engine runs at one position use that as a starting point and then adjust the timing to factory specs.

thanks bro I just watched 4 you tube videos on this subject and looks like I've got it right just looked like it was off thanks for the input
