is there any way to temporally take full time four wheel drive off for daily driving to get better gas milage?

If you have 2 hi, put it in that. If not (you probably have a limited), then no. You're stuck.

if he doesnt have 2 hi then couldnt he drop the front driveshaft? its not that hard.

get lockers. way easier than dropping your front drive-shaft and putting it back on all the time
