Question type: Maintenance & Repair

What could cause a thermostat on a Jeep Liberty
give you a check engine light?

Engine overheating?

What could cause the engine to overheat?

Low coolant, bad water pump, dirty radiator etc.

A thermostat that's stuck open will trigger the check engine light. From a cold start the engine must reach normal operating temperature within a certain amount of time, usually 9 minutes. If not the check engine light will be triggered and a trouble code will set. A thermostat that's stuck open won't allow the engine to reach operating temperature. Hope that helps! Jim
