The most likely cause is that the piston seals have failed and no pressure is available to squeeze the clutch reverse clutch. This is an internal problem and transmission must be removed to repair it. The car is over 20 years old, you don't say how many miles are in the vehicle, but I would say it is time for the transmission start showing signs of wear. When you put it in reverse, does it try to move at all?
