88 aod transmission

Transmission only has overdrive at start up ...when
hit brakes and drive again it tries to go into od but
wont stay but stop and shut it off and start over it
does fine

Check the TV cable first, the plastic grommet on the throttle body blade sometimes cracks and breaks. If that is OK, then it might be time for a rebuild due to the overdrive band being burnt, which is a common issue.
