Planning to buy a second hand Toyota Prius or Honda Insight in Ireland. I'm really not sure if it's safe to buy a Hybrid that is already 6 years old (as I'm looking at the 2013 versions with less than 90.000 Km mileage . I was told the Insight runs with an electric engine instead of battery (so called IMA), does it mean it's safer to buy an old version as the battery wont need to be replaced soon? Any advise is very welcomed as I'm very lost at the moment.

I would avoid all hybrid vehicles simply because battery replacement in five or six years could cost $4000 US dollars. I believe all hybrids have a gas engine, an electric motor, and a huge battery. Under various driving conditions, the gas and the electric motors take turns powering the vehicle. Also, at times, the gas engine powers the electric motor to act like a generator to recharge the battery. I'm no expert on these vehicles but I know enough to avoid them like a plague. I know petrol is very expensive in Europe so I would look for a diesel powered VW Golf or Jetta. They are the most popular vehicles worldwide and their efficient use of fuel is the reason. Things are different in Europe so ask your knowledgeable friends and do some research first. Just remember, all vehicle energy ultimately comes from fossil fuels whether it is a hybrid or diesel...the difference is the diesel is not lugging along a dying battery.
