Kia 2013 shutting down while running?

Asked by Sep 01, 2017 at 07:51 PM about the 2013 Kia Sorento

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello! First time here!

I have a 2013 Kia Sorento that is having some
problems. Yesterday, I was sitting at a stop sign
fixing to turn right. I saw my chance and
accelerated normally, not stomping on the gas or
anything.

About 1/4 through the 90 degree turn, my car died.
The battery light came on. The steering locked, the
breaks locked. I was lucky there was a slanted
driveway right in front of me because I couldn't do
anything.

I couldn't put it in park, but it was sitting there so I
called a friend who was following me. She turned
around and sat behind me while I (without turning it
off), tried and was able to put it into reverse. The
steering and breaks unlocked and I was able to
drive it to safety.

I left it for the day in the safe place, and went back
later to test it. We stuck a reader in it and drove it
several miles, not tripping anything. Then we took it
to autozone and they couldn't find anything wrong
with the alternator or battery, even though the
battery light came on.

Does anyone know what's happening? Or where I
can start looking? Online, there seems to be a class
action lawsuit going on and it seems to be related,
but I'm a broke college student with a job and who
lives off campus. I can't afford to be without a car. If
it's fixable without big bucks being involved I'd
rather that option.
