can't get over 45mph

1996 ford ranger automatic has new plugs and wires and timing belt 2wheel drive. had all this done and still can't get over 45 mph. I'm stumped

Sounds like your cat converter is plugged solid. Happened on my 88 Toyota 4x4. Wouldn't go over 50. Take it off and look inside of it. If that is the issue, you better fix it soon or it will burn out your valves. Or just unbolt it and take it for a spin. If you have all the power back, that will also tell you that it's plugged.

I have the exact same problem with my 2000 Form Ranger XLT 6 cylinder automatic.. Won't go over 50 MPH. Just passed State Inspection. Runs great but feels like it loses gear at 50 mph. Speedometer drops to zero. Replaced speed sensor and good tune-up. What is going on?
