96 Ranger Vapor Lock

Asked by 96Ranger Jun 19, 2010 at 10:14 AM about the 1996 Ford Ranger

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The truck stalls on the way home from work after about 30 minutes of driving on warm days. I can bleed of the air in the fuel line through the shrader valve and it will start and run for a short time then I have to stop and repeat the process. I have replaced the fuel pump, the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel filter. Static fuel pressure is at 36 psi. No codes except a lean mixture on baks 1 and 2. Any ideas?

you are not vapor locking, fuel injected engines dont do that, vapor lock is a thing of the past with the manual fuel pump, the codes you are getting ,bank 1 & 2 are the oxygen scencors, replace them and you should be fine.

try cleaning you mass air flow sensor located in the hose between the air intake and filter, buy a can of maf cleaner and only use that do not touch the sensor,i had error codes on my f150 and after cleaning it they went away

I believe the fuel injection system can vapor lock. my 94 ranger 3.0 has left me on the side of the road that's where I am now. studying the problem. turn the key off the fuel rail stll has pressure, vapor and fuel, let that pressure all, wait 20 seconds, has vapor and fuel pressure again. Wait and bleed pressure off again. I bet a 100 buck, I found out what it is. ford bolted the fuel rail straight to the intake, aluminum of course, heat is transferred to the fuel lines, causing vapor, or gas to boil in the fuel lines around the injectors. this is happening so much the vapor cannot be bled out. I am goint to try placing phenolic or plastic washers between fuel rails and aluminum intake.... Randy Sims

I had the same problem and it ended up being the fuel pump heating up and quit pumpin fuel even though I can here it run still once it cooled off it would run again connect a fuel pressure gauge to the vehicle and drive it till it stalls out and read the fuel pressure.
