Rebuild or replace engine on 2012 Subaru Legacy

My daughter's 2012 Subaru
Legacy needs an engine.  She
said she was losing oil and it
seized up and died.  Is it
possible to rebuild or does it
need to be replaced?

The problem with a seized engine is you won't know how bad the damage is until you tear it down. A bearing could have spun damaging the bearing surface and require machining to repair. Just to prep the block and heads for rebuilding a seized engine can mean extensive cleaning, checking and potentially machining. A remanufactured engine can save you a lot of costs and time in the long run.

I would probably buy a new short block from Subaru. You can rebuild the heads and install them on the new block.

If it has less than 100k miles on it take it to a dealer. Subaru is replacing our 2013 legacy engine. They did an oil consumption test on ours and it failed. That is why they are replacing it.
