engine light comes on goes off

Asked by Jan 31, 2019 at 08:05 PM about the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

A few weeks ago, I hit a large bump and the icon for check engine came on.
After I shut the truck off for the night, light went out. Today, light popped back
on, several weeks after the first time. What could this be? So at least I have
some knowledge before I have it checked at repair shop? Truck is running great
.

You didn't say which light is on, so here's a summary. The orange light is less drastic than the red, or flashing red. The orange light can signify something as simple as a loose gas cap, which is the first thing to check. As the car is running with no sign of a problem, and if the light continues after a few restarts after you tighten the gas cap, you can schedule a service trip at your convenience: it's not urgent. If the light changes to red, it can indicate a misfire or overheating system and requires greater attention. Have the car serviced soon. If the light flashes, this is urgent and you stop the car.

It is the engine light that comes on and it stays orange. I did buy gas a day before, so I will check the gas cap. Thank you very much, your answer is really helpful!
