do i need water pump

car has never ran hot..drove 5 miles and overheated to the red. put 50/50
coolant in and got home...thought it was thermostat and replaced..drove
the next day for 50 miles and never overheated..got back in car to go home
and within 2 miles, it shot up to extreme hot in the red....sat, cooled, put
water in and drove and kept hot 3/4 way,,when stopped , got real
hot,,,going somewhat slow , it wasnt as hot..

Why do you have to add coolant? Is the coolant leaking out? I suspect that you are loosing all your coolant so find the leak. Check the hoses, water pump and radiator for leaks.
