how do I diagnose a thermostat?

Temperature gauge moves from 1/2 to 3/4, and it's usually between 1/4 and 1/2. Heat only starts to get warm when gauge is around 3/4 which is not usual. I was afraid to drive it for very long. Does this sound like a thermostat?

put it in a cup of hot water ...just to boiling...does it open all the way..no binding...there cheap... just replace it
