Bypassed the AC compressor with a shorter belt, but now the engine light stays on and the car will not keep running.

Might be unrelated. Scan the car for the OBDii codes. Your local auto parts store can do it for free. Post back here and we can help further.

Could be the shorter belt size was either too long or too short and now something is slipping or binding.
