What can happen to my car, if I do not immediately replace the tie rod ends?

If they have a bit of play in them your steering will be a bit sloppy. Drivable but not very safe. If they are loose now you have a problem. They can pop off and you will lose control of your car. If a REPUTABLE mechanic has told you to replace them DO IT.
