battery warning light

driving home the battery warning light came on, strong smell of rubber burning and when I pulled over the car would not go into park, only drive and nuetral

I suspect the burning rubber is the serpentine belt, which drives the alternator causing the charging light to come on. I'm not sure why your shifter would not go into park.
