Should I consider a Mercedes R Class?

Asked by nk Nov 13, 2012 at 11:17 AM about the 2011 Mercedes-Benz R-Class

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

I'm shopping for a vehicle that can seat 6-7 people.  Mostly for the daily carpool run and don't want a
minivan.  I've looked at the Q56 (too bloated), MDX, Q7 (3rd row is too small) and the Suburban, Yukon
and Escalade (not happy GM took government bailout money).   Didn't like Ford or Hondas.

I'm interested in the Mercedes R class but wondering if this is a bad idea since they are no longer being
sold in the US.   They are ugly outside but the interior has lots of room and has lots of nice features.
Considering a Pre-Owned 2011.   The Black looks like a hearse so I'd avoid that.  I plan on driving the
car for many years.   The BlueTEC diesel gets good mileage and is better on the environment.

Any feedback?  Thank You.

NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! as much as I love the German contributions to the world, there is no justification to inheriting such a maintenance nightmare, (my opinion), the electronics, and sunroof mishaps, are insane....please reconsider the Q7 or if 4x4 is not a necessity the ugly x-6, (i say 4x4 as they are worthless in the snow).

I OWN the R500 and it's nice! I use it as my daily driver and it's a pig on gas. My car gets out of the way of slower moving vehicles. Something that is a must for me! I have kids and family members who are all above 6ft tall. We recently went out and I drove. Everyone was comfy and we fit 3 people in the 3rd row. I recently got a quote to get the sunroof fixed ($3000)but I shouldn't have any problems after that. If you do get this car (diesel or other r models) be ready to spend money on gas and maintenance. I would say that for all Mercedes Benz products. You can't beat the customer service, courtesy vehicles and 24-7 Road Side assistance. I looked at all of the larger suv and even the Mercedes trucks but the R500 wagon suit the bill for me. It's a luxury vehicle that the family is proud to ride in. Did I mention it has dvd players for the kids, all the seats fold down which makes for great shopping trips ;-) when you're alone. Test drive it and see what you think. The R500 was a great choice for me. Good luck! did I mention that is does well on the highway and in the snow? Love it!

....One more thing! Get a warranty with your vehicle. My warranty is through my insurance company and it has saved me money!

I own R320 CDI. It is nice car until you get maintenance issue. Then it is v.v expensive . Every dealer trip could cost couple thousands.
