there are times that the gear symbol would come on and if it does, the transmission won't shift. I believe it happens when I try to start the car when it's cold like in the mornings. When the car's engine is hot, it does not come on no matter how many times I try to start it.

My BMW is doing that now, it never overheated but a hose had a leak so it shut down on me & now it turns on but the exclamation mark is still on and it won't drive in any gear.... did you happen to find out how to fix?

The last 2 days my 2005 BMW 325i started squealing on my commute to work. These days were 3 days apart and each followed a snow day in our area.
