1989 BMW 328i Convertable top problem

I am having a problem with my 1989 BMW 328i Convertible. When I push the button to lower the top in only goes halfway down the stops and the top switch blinks. Any thoughts?

have you checked hydrolic fluid in the raising and lowering piston

My thoughts- your car is 25 years old- and a monument to German Engineering- are you going to try to fix that top yourself?!
