Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Check engine light came on. Then tighten
gas cap indicator on the dash flashed on and
off. Replaced the gas cap with a new gas
cap, check engine light was still on.
Disconnected the battery terminal, check
engine light stayed off for maybe a day and
came back on.

I guess the problem wasn't the gas cap. The check engine light informs you that there is a malfunction in your engine or transmission control system. You need to get the problem properly diagnosed and repaired. If it's just the basic yellow light it could just be a loose gas cap, which you already eliminated. so this might be a problem with the EVAP system, like a faulty purge valve or a vacuum leak; especially if the CEL comes on, then goes out shortly after driving.. Go to a car parts store and have codes read, probably free, to find out which system is causing this. Or just see a mechanic to diagnose & fix.
