car won't start after many running errands and being turned off 5 or 6 times, if I put it into neutral the nback into first it starts. ALso check engine light is lit. Garage can't find problem.

I would say at a long guess your alternator cant charge your battery correctly so your battery is going dead or your car has dirty wires and isnt getting a good power from battery. also check make sure ignition and ignition switch is good maybe wore out.

Sounds like it might have something to do with the neutral safety switch because by moving the shifter you are moving the safety switch allowing it to make contact. Just a guess though.
