Sub-frame

Asked by audubonmom Apr 16, 2008 at 10:56 PM about the 2000 Hyundai Sonata

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

After getting off a major highway and while pulling thruogh the very first intersection my axle pulled right out of the subframe. Had it happened 1/10 of a mile sooner it would have spelled total disaster for myself, mother and son. The first mechanic told me that the subframe was rotted out and the axle slipped right out. I got a 2nd opinion from another mechanic and low and behold another customer of his had the very same experience w/ their 2000 Sonata. They took it to the local Hyundai dealership and after much ado they did replace/repair the problem at no cost. HOWEVER no recall was ever issued. This came very close to costing myself and my family their lives. I am now in the process of working with the local dealership to have my vehicle repaired (hopefully at no cost). Please just as a safety warning - if you own a 2000 Sonata - have a trusthworthy mechanic check out the subframe before it's too late.

I have a 2000 Sonata (79,000 mile) that in 2006 the samething happened to me. I spent 4 months fighting with them before they settled with me. since then I have spoke to 20-25 people with the same issue and no of at least 15-18 have been reimbursed. could you please let me know your miles on your car an your city. I am working on collecting this data. I can be reached at tntnknb@juno.com. Hyundai is paying for these repairs. you need to file a claim with hyundai consumer affairs. I started this on a blog on edmunds.com car talk, and there are many other enties from most of the people I have talked to. my Hyundai claim number was 544762 and you can refer to it it has helped many others. Good Luck. Tom Baker KAnsas City, mo

Since November 2006 I have been contacted by 25 different people who have all experienced a failure with the right front subframe rusting apart and actually breaking. Approximately 18 people have been settled with, either Hyundai repairing the car or reimbursing for the repair. Most people have been on the eastern have of the United States. I have been working with an attorney building a case for a class action Lawsuit. We are currently looking for anyone who has had this problem and not contacted me. The NHTSA Number PE08029 is an active investigation that report 40 known failures. I am especial interested in anyone from California. If you own a 1999-2001 Hyundai Sonata I suggest inspecting your subframe for rust. If you are not sure where to look, you should turn your steering wheel all the way to the right. Look where the A-Arm bolts to the frame. You will probably find severe rust. If you do, I would like to hear from you at tntnknbjuno.com Even if it has not failed yet, I suggest taking it to a Hyundai dealer and filing a claim with Hyundai Consumer affairs. My hope is that Hyundai, who has admitted to a problem by paying for repairs will soon address this obvious safety issue. Tom Baker, Kansas City, MO

I took my 2001 Hyundai Sonata in to my local mechanic (not Hyundai) for bearing problems and steering problems. He discovered two fist-sized holes from rust in the sub-frame. Thankfully I discovered this before having the wheels fall off. I've filed a claim with Hyundai (800-633-5151) and will file one with the NHTSA tonight. Hopefully Hyundai will reimburse me for the $1330 repair! I think it is unconscionable for a recall notice not to be released! This has been reported to effect years 1999-2002, although at this point I'd advise anyone with a Hyundai, especially an older one, to have this checked out immediately. You wont have much warning before it goes. Check your Hyundais!!!

I bought my 2001 Sonata last year, and just recently had my front right subframe break from rust. Luckily I was drivin in the middle of the night when there were no cars following behind me. I was looking for the part to repair it when I came across this forum. Now does it make a differences if you didnt buy the car from a Hyundai dealership? Dwayne Jackson Edison NJ

my husband has a 2000 hyundai sonata and we just realized how fast we were going through tires. it turns out his subframe is about ready to completely break apart. he isnt the first owner of this car but the problems just started occuring like pulling to the right. we were almost in an accident because of this. now my father is a mechanic and owns a used car lot and auto shop if he is the one to put the part on will we still be reimbursed or do we have to take it to a hyundai dealership? also will it make a difference that there were previous owners of this car? if you have any answers please email me at kayla_klahn@yahoo.com or lyricalexercise2@yahoo.com thank you very much!

I have a 2000 sonata and back in march of 2009 I was pulling out of a parking spot, then put in drive a all of a sudden the axle broke off due to the sub frame rusting out. Earlier to this incident we couldn't figure out what was wrong with the car it was acting up bad. But I do recall a few years back when getting a oil change the mechanic had told me to come out and look at the rusted hole in the sub frame. at the time it was about the size of a quarter i didn't get it fix, didn't think it was going to be a big problem, but now i regret not taking it to Hyundai. it has been sitting in the driveway since march cause we couldn't pay to get it fix. but thank you all for the god advice. I am going to the Hyundai dealership tomorrow to tell them about it and hopefully they will fix it.

I heard an extremely loud sound while driving my 1999 Hyundai Sonata GLS coming from the front passenger side of the vehicle and all of a sudden the front of the vehicle dropped significantly. I immediately stopped the vehicle and got out to see if I had hit something or to see exactly what had happened. Upon inspection the front passenger side A-Frame had completely rusted out of the sub frame of the vehicle causing it to break completely off. Thankfully I was travelling at a low rate of speed or it could have caused a major accident or even further damage to the vehicle. Upon research it was discovered that there is a NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 09V124000 that addresses this same issue prompting Hyundai to issue a recall 089, however, when I contacted the dealership they stated there was no recall for this vehicle. The factory recall campaign covers vehicles in the "salt belt" and this vehicle was originally titled in Missouri and we owned it in Illinois which are both considered part of the "salt belt" as salt is used to melt ice on the roads during the winter months. Hyundai consumer affairs was absolutely no help and they did nothing but contact the dealership...which in turn looked up the VIN and told them it's not covered under the recall. I told consumer affairs that I need someone in Hyundai to explain to me why this particular vehicle is not covered and they told me to look in my owner’s manual under "Alternative Dispute Resolution" which is absolutely garbage because that tells you to contact a third party for dispute resolution...why can't Hyundai answer my question, it's their vehicle and THEIR RECALL!!! I'm absolutely disgusted with Hyundai consumer affairs and I am appalled that they won't honor a SAFETY RECALL!

I drive a 2006 Hyundai Sonata and last week turned a corner and heard a tremendous noise coming from my back end.It turns out it was my control arm and it had rusted out, I had it towed to the dealer and the next day received a call to tell me the entire sub frame was rusted out cost to fix $2500.00.I asked them if they could do anything for me and they said no but did give me the customer service toll free number, which I called right away.I talked to a lady named Judy and within 5 minutes she told me not to worry they would fix the car at no charge and even pay the towing. While I'm upset that the car has rusted so badly, but I have to say "Way to go Hyundai great customer service."

How do I get my 2000 Hyundai Sonata checked out for this? Also has anyone had anymore problems that they can't figure out going on. I have my problem posted on here. If anyone can help me please let me know. I need answers to all of these problems when I'm the only person that has driven this car and I drive like a granny because of an accident that I was in back in 2000 from a recall on my break pressure control valve on my ford contour. I was only going 30mph into a curve and I tapped my breaks and they locked up. The car spun sideways and flipped me down the road three times while I was falling half in and half out of the drivers side window. I hired a lawyer because Ford took my car before I could get out of the hospital a week later when I tried to take a mechanic to go check the problem out. My lawyer, private investigator, and I never found my car but I'm scared for life and disabled because of owning a Ford Contour that had a recall on the break pressure control valve that I got in the mail a week after my accident. Now all these sonata problems that I'm having are scaring me. The car will soon be driven by my 17 year old daughter. Thanks...Melissa Please check out my question I posted on here and comment if anyone knows what is going on or any new problems arise.

I have a 2000 Sonata bought used last year. Just today the lower left control arm pulled completely out of rusted frame while my daughter was driving it. Lucky she was slowing down to turn and was moving slowly when it happened. Both sides are rusty and right side appears to fairly bad as well. Are there still any ongoing claims with Hyundai on this issue? Any information would be greatly appreciated. I can be reached email at joekedmondson@gmail.com

I have a 2009 Santa Fe with a corroded sub frame. Hynduai says they can fix, is this possible ?? Will the vehicle be safe for my family

Have same issue with hyundai sonata 2004 and the subframe is corroded that next time i drive it will snap off. I have uploaded the photo. I spoke to the recall. they say it has not being affected in the recall as it was manufactured 4 months after the recall date that is march 2004. i also said that even if it was manufactured 4 months later. it is the same issue that is listed on the recall , then they said that we dont know what previous owners did to the car(as if they sat below the car and made sure the sub frame should be corroded). hyundai doesn't want to take the blame that it was faulty frame design for the particular year and the next. any thoughts anyone?

Have you gotten any help with this. Because my 87 year old mother was driving yesterday 3/11/19 and her right front sub-frame broke off and left her stranded. Good thing she wasn't going very fast or this could have been really bad for her. She has a 2006 Hyundai Sonata with miles 145376 on it. I just got off with the Hyundai care people and they told me to get in contact with my local dealer (as if they will fix it). Care people told me that it was out of there 10 year warranty and they cant do anything under warranty. I get that but it is a defect and hundreds of people are having the same problem. They replaced the rear sub-frame because it was under recall but this was before my mother got it. I fill that both sub-frame's should have been under the recall since they both were probably made by the same company. Anyway If anybody has any info or ideas I would be interested in some advice on this. Thank you Keith

My Santa Fe was under 10 years old so Im not too sure how that fits in the equation. I received fair compensation but it was a hassle. I threatened them with lawyers and legal action and they backed down. I would use the idea that my mom has undue stress from this situation. I would consider legal advice since this Hynduai problem is 15 years old. They use their own steel which is sub par. Good Luck
