Braking issue when towing with Ford 350 diesel
Truck brakes fine when not towing but when pulling 18,000 lb trailer it barely stops the trailer. Wore out 2nd set of truck brakes and it sounds like another set are about to go...Trailer checked out and works fine with other trucks, We increased the size of the fuse up to 50 from 30 hand option helps a bit but not real well...
Do you have the "ITBC" integrated trailer brake controller? Have you had any other issues?
Yes, I believe I do have a ITBC and I haven't had any other issues. The trailer has good brakes but the trailer is 13 years old with older style brakes which I had checked out....It seems like my brake pedal doesn't talk to the controller but even using the hand part of the controller the trailer doesn't shut down (brake wise) as I would expect....any suggestions?
These malfunction pretty regularly. The most common thing to do is replace the factory with an aftermarket. If you're dead set on fixing your current brake controller, you'll probably want to have someone local diagnose it. After replacing the factory with an aftermarket, a dealer can remove the message about the trailer brake being disabled. I'm sure this isn't the answer you wanted to hear but this is the best route to ensure the problem has been eliminated. My next post will include a link to a plug-and-play harness for your ford. Copy and paste it to view the item. Let me know if you would like to attempt diagnosis of your oem controller by yourself. I can still help by walking you through diagnosis. Many aftermarket controllers come with the plug and play harness. Check out etrailer.com for vehicle specific options.
