How do I know if the battery needs replacing
And how long so I charge so I can start the car

Batteries last on avg 4-6 years. Some to 8 years. If yours is in the range, time to replace. A good battery will have a voltage of 12.2V or more. You can charge the battery up , and it might be good for the time being, but slowly discharge and back to the same problem. Use a trickle charger like a battery tender.

Also your local auto parts store can test it under a load to determine if it should be replaced or not.
