I have a Hyundai accent and want to diagnose problem

it has been running rough at highway speed, and engine makes more noise
than usual. The check catalytic converter warning light is on. Also when I use
the cruise control it sometimes surges from 3000 rpm to 6000rpm, and then
adjusts back down to normal. What could be causing this

Maybe you should check the catalytic converter?
