2002 Hyundai Elantra won't start after filling with gas unless I rev the engine

Asked by NickB123 Oct 06, 2015 at 06:04 PM about the 2002 Hyundai Elantra

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

A used 2002 Hyundai Elantra that I picked up will immediately stall out after
I try to turn it on after filling it with gas.  If I hold down the accelerator for a
bit, then it is fine.  It is like it has to build up pressure somewhere.  I am not
topping off the gas.  After a bit of internet searching it sounds like this could
be the purge valve, so I got one.  Is there a way to test it before and after
replacing without adding gas?  I tried removing the gas cap and pushed in
the "flapper" but it still started up just fine.  Anyone know of a way?  (If it
matters, I work with computers and know nothing about cars.)

Thanks!

You found correct information. EVAP purge vale or solenoid for it. Or gas tank vent valve... when you fuel up, the air and fumes have to be displaced. But not in ti the air we all breathe. So the fumes are passed through a charcoal canister, are absorbed there, and when car is started the purge valve opens and runs the raw hydrocarbons back through the engine. I know no way of testing the purge valve other than an OBDII scan that will throw an OBDII code of P0441

I have a 2003 Elantra. Was doing the same thing. I replaced both, purge valve and vent valve since I had no way to check if they were air tight. $50 a part isn’t bad. I also rebuilt my charcoal canister since I found pellets in my fuel pump when I replaced it. New they cost $200. I spent $25 on parts and my time. It was pretty simple overall. Hardest part was opening the canister. Since then I have had no issues filling with gas. I did have the map sensor go bad right afterwards but that’s the way it goes.
