The last two posts is the best videos I could find. The first one is for your large battery in the trunk spare tire area. (www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jak7xKCYOq0). The second one is for you smaller one for the SBC. I believe this is the one giving you the issues. (http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=neVPZnHAF_w&feature=relmfu ). Hope this helps

Battery in engine bay is only for starting. All other electrical functions of the car are handled by the auxiliary battery in the trunk.

Thought this was a big deal. Got "Auxiliary Battery Malfunction" on my dash yesterday. Today, in addition, there was a message that read "Change Key Battery." Brought the car into dealer & service advisor said bring the key to the cashier. In less than one minute, the cashier changed the battery at no charge & gave me back the key. When I started the car both messages disappeared & I was on my way. Very simple solution.

The same thing happen to me, with my GLK, I when and got my battery change then complain about the message that show up so they told me 210$ to change the the battery which they could not explain what is the function of the auxiliary battery , but as soon as I return to car all notice disappeared. So I can cancel my 210$ appointment. All I need to do was change the battery in the remote.

bobkat's answer is off. The main battery in both videos are in the truck. And the aux battery is in the engine bay, under cover. So what is the function of the aux battery and why is it necessary? The auxiliary battery exists for safety concern. Say there is a faulty alternator that won't charge. Eventually, the main battery drains and quit. In older cars this is not a problem and most likely, you can still brake to a stop. In newer ones with ABS, ALS, EBRAKE, etc. The brakes are electronically controlled. Therefore, if there is no electricity, there is no braking. The aux battery takes over when the main battery fails. Most newer german cars have this feature. Hope this answer helps.
