1997 Ford Explorer

Asked by beccalove008 Apr 04, 2016 at 12:15 AM about the 1997 Ford Explorer

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I was driving down the road and I heard (and
felt) a hard clunk, which friggin scared the life
out of me! It slowed a bit and just seemed like
something wasn't right. Well, then I stopped it
and let it sit for a while and the next time I got
in, it started up just fine. But it won't go
anywhere in drive!? It will back up in reverse
AND in neutral!? It does absolutely NOTHING in
drive but it will go forward in 1st and 2nd (not a
standard). It's AWD.

Something broke in the transmission or the transfer case.
