What could make my battery light come on only at 40 mph and below?

Asked by rickybobby209 Oct 20, 2014 at 07:16 PM about the 1995 Honda Civic

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When my speed drops below 40 mph
my battery light comes on and stays
on when at a stop, until I start
accelerating again. Also when the
light does come on (below 40 mph) I
can make it turn off by turning
something on like my heater, head
lights, etc. Pretty much anything that
draws power. I tested voltage at my
battery with engine off- 12.9 volts.
With engine on- 14.2 volts. But when
the battery light is on I see below 13
volts as if the alternator wasnt
working. My alternator is brand new
not remanufactured and I installed it
yesterday. Battery is 5 months old
optima yellow top. Please help me
out. Any suggestions are greatly
appreciated.
