Spark plugs / catalytic converters

Asked by Kelsey Jul 27, 2018 at 10:33 AM about the 2009 GMC Acadia

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We're having trouble with oil that keeps getting in and fouling the spark plugs. It
started to run extremely rough yesterday so we replaced the spark plugs again.
Now it won't hardly run at all. We believe it may be the catalytic converters.
What can we do to stop the oil from getting in the spark plugs, which in turn
probably fouled up my cats?

Oil on the spark plugs is a sign that your piston rings are worn out. Have you seen any blueish smoke coming out of the exhaust? It is another sign that the rings are shot. And, yes, your cat s may be clogging as a result if it is bad enough.

Yes, starting Friday blueish smoke was coming out of the exhaust. Also on Friday, we replaced all the spark plugs. By Sunday evening they were already fouled out, and we'd only driven the car maybe 10-20 miles top. I'll look into this. Thank you!
