Crank no start

Asked by Red_Beard1994 Feb 25, 2017 at 09:50 PM about the 1972 Volkswagen Super Beetle

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Have a 72 Superbeetle that cranks but won't start.
It starts under the power of starting fluid but will
not run with the air cleaner on, but will idle if I leave
my hand over the top of the carb slightly. Anyone
got any ideas?? Have cleaned and rebuilt carb.
Next option was buying a new carb.

It might be running too lean, only suggestion is to pick up an old manual on your vintage of carburetor, as its fuel metering may be off. FYI it's a but safer to pour a very minuscule amount of gas down the carb to get it started versus spraying all that starter fluid in there, I've seen some pretty severe backfires from that stuff.
