My 71' superbeetle is taking a bit to start up and when it does it sounds like it wants to backfire or pop and white smoke comes out.

Hi Laura ...with the information that you provided it sounds like you are having ignition issues. Either you have carbon tracking or a crack in the distributor cap or wires leaking over....but most likely its a bad condenser if it still has a points set up in it ...the other thing to look at is the distributor shaft for Radial play (side to side)....here is a link to Dave and Robs air cooled web site that gives a lot of info http://www.vw-resource.com/right_dizzy.html....I hope this was help to you good luck.
