VW polo won't reverse

Asked by Leigh Feb 18, 2017 at 07:37 AM about the 2008 Volkswagen Polo

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi
My Volkswagen Polo 08 reg has been in
the garage since 18th January due to an
operation I was having. I went to drive it
out this morning. It started fine but when I
put it in reverse it wouldn't move. It lifted
slightly as if the handbrake was on but it
wasn't on. Can you help please.

Is it very cold where you are and could the car be froze to the floor?

Emergency parking brake can become stuck due to a faulty cable or faulty calipers. Release your parking brake then shifting the gear from drive to reverse a few times to help loosen the emergency brake that stuck.

Hi Leigh, Did you manage to find out what was wrong with your VW Polo? I have just gone to reverse mine off the drive, and it will not reverse as if the brake is on like you described. Very strange! How did you get yours going again?

Same happened to me, a few times at random. Not knowing what to do I end up switching off and on again. Make sure that you get the gear back to P before switching on again.
