How can I fix the electric seat/bed in my GMC Starcraft conversion van ?

Asked by Nico May 25, 2016 at 11:15 PM about the 1991 GMC Vandura

Question type: General

The rear seat/bed is electric in my van, and it won't make back into a seat. The motors work, but it seems to get stuck or something and stays a bed. How to fix, please ?

get out your toolbox and get under there and figure it out- if you don't want to do this, hire a mechanic to do it- those are uncomfortable "beds" anyway- maybe just take the whole thing out and throw it away and put a real bed back there- with curtains and a disco ball-

Did you ever figure out what was wrong? I just bought one of these and have the same issue.

me as well only mine wont go flat ..ok the 2 screws that allow the seat to move backs and forwards are controlled by two cables one for each screw a smallish motor there will be two under the seat the motor turns the cable which in turn, turns a worm screw attached to the screw and in turn the scissor set up of the back seat moves either forwards or backwards ok its the same for the folding flat and raising of the back seat from bed to seat ,,as the motor turns it turns a cable which in turn turns a worm screw which is attached to the screw and as such the scissor set up of the back seat from seat to bed is operated all by a switch cool except when the worm thing inside the unit attached to the screws fail then its all noise and nuffin happening so undo the support bar at back of bed one each side and the bed will fold flat or sit up right slip pins back into support bar at back of seat and there you go a seat fixed slip pins out at back of seat and you got a flat bed simple,s

Same problem, but it was in the ground wires by the back doors. Added new ground wires and it works just fine. And mine is a 1992.

Maybe too late for you folks, but not for others that might stumble across this thread with the same problem. I had the exact same problem on my 1995 Glaval "Gladiator" - motor has life, but just made a grinding noise and didn't move the bed. I was going to replace the motor, so started taking it to pieces to check what parts I needed. I found an electronic controller unit tucked behind the motor under the plastic cover. On the corner of that controller unit is a very small dial to increase or decrease the current - turned by a jewellery-sized flat head screwdriver. I dialled it up a quarter turn and then found that the bed unit started working properly. FIXED! Incidentally, I had also found a replacement motor online. Do not search using the PE2360Q number, but on the other one 400032-M and you'll find this: https://www.rvandvansurplus.com/Short-Style-Sofa-Motor_p_212.html So in case the current fix increase doesn't work, you can still get a replacement online. You might also need to replace both of the cables.
